I can truly say that therapy has changed my life - so much so that I decided to pursue it as a profession. People choose to go to therapy for a variety of different reasons. Maybe they are struggling with anxiety, feeling down, having a hard time in relationships, or trying to navigate a big life change. Therapy can be useful in many ways. Here are the ways in which therapy has personally made my life better.
First, my relationships have changed. When I was younger, I found myself in a series of relationships in which I would struggle to communicate with my partners. I did not know how to approach difficult topics, express my feelings in a healthy way, or set appropriate boundaries. Therapy has taught me skills and given me insight into how to have better relationships. And now I find myself happy and fulfilled with my partner, my family, and my friends.
Second, I am more aware of myself, my feelings, and the thoughts that drive my behaviors. I am able to self-reflect and monitor myself so I know when I need to work on changing my thinking or my behaviors. I understand what motivates me and what is important to me, and it helps me live an authentic life. I get to be the best version of myself.
And third, I am able to manage stress, anxiety, and other unpleasant feelings in a healthier way. Not to say that I don't hit bumps in the road, but overall I find that I can better cope with challenging experiences and more confidently move through change. My level of resiliency has improved and I am able to use more effective stress management techniques and coping skills.
Therapy can be a transformative experience that you might find to be life-changing in a number of positive ways. Therapy has taught me about myself, others, and the world in a way that has impacted me so much that I want to give back to others in the same way.
